We can confirm that Michael Ugwu is no longer the CEO of iROKING and has left the company. He was dismissed earlier this month with immediate effect for gross misconduct. It came to light that, whilst under contract and salary of iROKING, Michael Ugwu set up and launched his own digital music platform, in direct competition with iROKING. This is an unequivocal breach of the robust non-compete and confidentiality clause he signed when he joined the iROKO team. We will not be divulging any further details on the subject matter for legal reasons.

Evans resigns as Etisalat CEO

         

Steven Evans has resigned as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian subsidiary of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation operating as Etisalat in the country.

Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that Evans resigned last month and returned home to the United Kingdom after leading the company for most of its five years in existence.

The Chief Commercial Officer, Matthew Willsher, was appointed as acting CEO in his place, the spokesperson for Etisalat Nigeria, Ms. Chineze Amanfo, was quoted as saying this by telephone on Wednesday.

Three members of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Economic Management team were on Tuesday named among several Africans shortlisted for the 2013 Forbes Africa Person of the Year award.

The shortlist released by the United States-based business website, comprised three Nigerians, one South African and one Zimbabwean.

They included Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Akinwunmi Adesina, for his vision in making Nigeria a self-sustaining, food-producing nation, which hopes to register over 20 million farmers by 2015; Africa’s richest man and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, whose net worth has significantly increased on the back of his continued business successes in various sectors of the continent’s economy, including oil and gas, petro-chemicals, transport and haulage, manufacturing and commodities.

Boy, 14, rapes nine-year-old girl to death

  The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape.

According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told PUNCH Metro that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended.

He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems.

The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.

Another plane crash averted in Abuja

According to punch

Another air disaster was averted at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja on Monday as a Med-View Airlines aircraft from Lagos suddenly took to the air again at the point of landing in Abuja.

The pilot told the passengers that he took to the air again to avoid a collision with another aircraft on the tarmac.

The airline Flight VL2104 took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at noon and was scheduled to land in Abuja at about 1.05pm.

The pilot had already announced final descent into Abuja and asked all passengers and cabin crew to fasten their seat belts but the pilot suddenly took off to the air again with barely 30 seconds to touch ground.

The plane had 150 passengers on board.

Family Confirms Death Of Former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe

The head of the Akhigbe family, Chief Joseph Akhigbe, on Tuesday confirmed the death of the former Chief of General Staff,  Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe.

Joseph confirmed the death  in their Fugar country home in Estako Central Local Government Area of Edo.

Yesterday same family of the former Chief of General Staff described as untrue, an online report that the former number two man died in a London hospital.

The elder brother Chief Joseph Akhigbe, said that the news about his death was shocking to the family because “it is not true and it is really embarrassing to us.

He said “My brother is stabilising in an American hospital and not even London as erroneously reported. As I speak to you now, the report in my opinion is pure speculation, the paper said he died in a London hospital but my brother is in an American hospital and he is stable.

Conrad Murray was sentenced to  four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death, but only served two because of California prison overcrowding.

Chris Brown arrested for felony assault

Chris Brown was arrested in Washington D.C. this morning for FELONY assault after allegedly attacking a man outside a hotel.

Brown got into an argument with a man outside the W Hotel at 15th and K and allegedly began punching him.  The incident  occurred at about 4:30 AM.

Brown did not appear to be under the influence of anything at the time of the incident.

Brown is currently in custody.  As for the other person, we're told he's being evaluated at a D.C. hospital.  Sources say he's claiming injury.

N32m ransom paid for Oronto Douglas’ sister — MEND

      

THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has said that contrary to claims by the family of the released sister of President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Mrs. Augusta Douglas-Ayam, the sum of $200,000 (N32m) was paid as ransom.

MEND in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, on Saturday, said though the victim was released unharmed, she developed high blood pressure and malaria while in captivity.

The militant group also said it was responsible for the destruction of feeder pipelines and well heads in Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta states from October 20, 2013 to October 26.

The group also claimed it had engaged some members of the Joint Military Task Force in a shootout and killed three soldiers and one policeman contrary to the statement issued by the JTF that armed robbers ambushed its men.

Court Awards Ibori Bribe Money To Federal Government

Federal high court sitting in Abuja has awarded the ownership of  $15 million former governor of Delta State ,James Ibori bribe money to the Federal government.

The court averred that the Delta state government failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the money belongs to it.

The Delta state government claimed ownership of the money allegedly given by Mr. Ibori,  as bribe to stave-off arrest by former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Oduah okayed purchase of N255m bulletproof cars – NCAA

 

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority on Thursday told the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation that the Ministry of Aviation approved the controversial purchase of the N255m bulletproof cars for Ms Stella Oduah.

The Director of Aerodrome in the NCAA, Mr. Joyce Nkem-Akonam, made this known during the  committee’s public sitting  in Abuja.

Nkem-Akonam, who handled the transaction  as  the acting managing director  of the NCAA,  had made spirited efforts to defend the purchase.

He told the committee members that since     “Leased financing, not direct financing, was   adopted to procure the vehicles,” the agency  breached no law.

When asked if  leased financing was not a commitment that the NCAA would still  pay for the vehicles, he  said  it did not mean that it was extra-budgetary spending.

Facing a barrage of questions from the committee members, he later said the NCAA got approval from the Aviation  ministry.

Oduah responds to Jonathan’s query

The Aviation Minister, on Wednesday, insisted that the procurement of the two armoured BMW vehicles at the cost of N255 million followed due process.

In a quick response to the query issued to her by President Goodluck Jonathan, Stella Oduah said that there was provision in the 2013 budget for the procurement of specialised equipment (including operational vehicles) to complement and, in some cases, replace obsolete ones.

Mrs. Oduah maintained that there is always an annual budgetary provision for the replacement of obsolete, inadequate and unreliable monitoring equipment.

“The NCAA (Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority) is charged with oversight responsibilities over all civil aviation operations in the country, including safety, security and strict compliance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, SARPs, and Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, NCARs,” Mrs. Oduah stated in her response.
