Kill public official who steals above N1m – TUC

   

The Trade Union Congress has recommended death  penalty for public officials who embezzle beyond N1m in order to reduce corruption in the country.

The President of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, said this during the fourth lecture series of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday.

While speaking on the theme, ‘Corruption and challenges in nation-building’, Kaigama noted that Nigeria needed to go tougher in its war against corruption.

He said that leaders had no reason not to declare their assets.

He said, “If the governments and legislators are truly sincere about the fight against corruption in the country, they must go tougher. Any public official, whether at the state or federal level, should be executed. Killing them after confirmation of any embezzlement allegation of more than N1m will lead us to the right path.

Nigerian Pleads Guilty to US Terror Charges

        

Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi has pleaded guilty in New York to charges he took part in a Yemen-based al-Qaida faction's efforts to spread propaganda intended to encourage terror attacks.

Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi entered the plea on Tuesday to charges of providing material support to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. He faces up to 30 years in prison at his August sentencing in federal court in Brooklyn.

The 33-year-old Babafemi was extradited last year from Nigeria. U.S. prosecutors say he traveled to Yemen in 2010 to help the al-Qaida group recruit English speakers for its media operations.

The operations included publication of an online magazine for aspiring terrorists. The magazine has published recipes for homemade bombs and suggested targets in the United States and elsewhere.

Aggrieved Chibok Women Storm Abuja, Protest At National Assembly

      

Aggrieved mothers and other indigenes of Chibok, Borno State, today in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, staged a protest to demand the immediate rescue or release of the more than 200 secondary school girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on April 14.

The protesters, most of them members of the Kibaku Development Association, Chibok, converged at Eagle Square in Nigeria’s capital. From there, they marched to the National Assembly to submit a protest letter. The women were led into the premises of the national legislature by a group of senior female police officers.

Some of the protesting women, who were all dressed in black, seemed unimpressed by the senators’ tepid words. A number of the women betrayed their emotion and wept profusely, a few of them rolling on the ground.See more pics after cut...

Donald Sterling receives lifetime ban

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life by the NBA in response to racist comments the league says he made in a recorded conversation.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday that he will try to force the controversial owner to sell his franchise. Sterling has also been fined $2.5 million, and Silver made no effort to hide his outrage over the comments.

Silver said a league investigation found that the NBA's longest-tenured owner was in fact the person on the audiotapes that were released over the weekend.

"We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling's views," Silver said. "They simply have no place in the NBA."

Sterling acknowledged he was the man on the tape, Silver said.

Sterling is immediately barred from attending any NBA games or practices, be present at any Clippers office or facility, or participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team. He also cannot participate in any league business going forward.

"This league is far bigger than any one owner, any one coach and any one player," Silver said.

The suspects, Ademola Okunlola, 36; Tajudeen Oluwanisola, 41; Kolawole Adams, 52; Temitope Pedro, 27; Bayo Olowoyo, 39 and Otunba Biodun Adebanjo, 56, were picked up in different locations in Lagos by operatives of the anti- graft agency for allegedly effecting the fraudulent transfer of N5, 550,000.00 from the account of one Ajani Kareem Musibau domiciled in Skye Bank Plc.

Boko Haram takes schoolgirls to Chad, Cameroon; marries them off on N2,000 bride price each

Most of the 234 Borno schoolgirls in Boko Haram captivity have been ferried abroad to Chad and Cameroon after they were married off to sect members on N2,000 bride price each, According to Dailytrust

The female students were taken from their hostels at the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok on the night of April 14.

About 40 had escaped in the days after the incident, but parents and school authorities said at least 234 of them were yet to be found.

Dr. Pogu Chibok, who is the leader of the Chibok Elders Forum, told Daily Trust yesterday that latest information available to them indicates that most of the girls have been taken to the neighboring Cameroon and Chad by their captors.

Police Teargas Polytechnic Lecturers In Abuja

   

The Nigerian police today fired tear gas canisters at protesting polytechnic lecturers who are engaging in a peaceful protest to force the Nigerian government to have dialogue with the lecturers relating to their demands.According to Saharareporters

The lecturers and a few poly students gathered at the federal Secretariat in Abuja for ask for reopening of Nigerian polytechnics whose lecturers had embarked on a strike since last year.

 The protesting Polytechnic lecturers  first gathered  at the Eagle Square early this morning  to protest non implementation of the agreement made by the both Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and the Federal Government and later marched down to the Ministry  of Education where Minister of Labour Emeka Wogu addressed the protesters and promised that their grievances would be addressed. The minister then  appealed for patience and understanding from the lecturers.           

However, disatisfied with the promise the peaceful rally later headed toward the  National Assembly complex where a protest letter was billed to be  submitted to the both the Senate and House of Representatives leadership. Armed policemen fired tear gas canisters at the  protesters and used hot water hoses to disperse the crowd.

Nigerian film-maker and Nollywood icon Amaka Igwe has shockingly passed on at 51. The sad incident occurred in Enugu where she had gone, in company of her husband, for pre-production preparations for a new Igbo soap. 
She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to a teaching hospital where doctors were on strike.

Mrs Igwe is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children Ruby, David and Daniel, an aged mother, siblings and a large extended family. Egyptian Court Sentences 638 To Death

                                               

An Egyptian judge has sentenced 683 alleged Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death, including the group’s supreme guide, Mohamed Badie, and confirmed the death sentences of 37 of 529 alleged supporters previously condemned.Outside the courtroom yesterday, when news of the sentencing broke, families of the accused began to scream and several women fainted.

Mohamed Elmessiry, an Amnesty International researcher monitoring the cases, said they “lacked basic fair trial guarantees”.

The defendants from the first case whose death sentences were not upheld were each sentenced to 25 years in prison.Many of the lawyers for the accused boycotted the hearing, demanding that the judge be recused and calling him a “butcher.”

Petroleum minister gets court injunction stopping Reps from probing N10billion jet scandal

Nigeria’s embattled petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has secured a court injunction ordering the House of Representatives to discontinue an ongoing investigation of how the minister allegedly squandered more than N10billion of public funds leasing private jets for two years.

A federal court in Abuja restrained the House, its committees or representatives from summoning Mrs. Alison-Madueke or requesting that she produce papers, documents or give evidence relating to the jet spending.

The presiding judge, A. R. Mohammed, also barred the lawmakers from ordering the minister’s arrest for failing to appear before the House Committee on Public Accounts, which is probing the allegation.

Mrs. Alison-Madueke is accused of spending billions of naira for the services of private jets she deployed for mostly personal trips. State oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, supervised by the minister, has absolved the minister of wrongdoing.

Policeman abducts, brutalises eight-year-old girl

       

Residents of Olufowobi Street, Ketu, Lagos, were thrown into confusion after an eight-year-old girl, Amarachi Abakwam, was found tied up and brutalised under the bed of a policeman attached to Police Mobile Force 22.According to report by Punch

The policeman, Augustine Gbuchenge, with Force number 400823, lived in the same compound with Amarachi’s family.

The father of the victim, Patrick, told PUNCH Metro that on the fateful day he had been looking everywhere for his daughter until they discovered her under Gbuchenge’s bed.

Patrick said, “Last Thursday, I returned from work around 7.30pm and met my children and wife outside. There was power failure on that day so everywhere was dark. I asked after Amarachi but my wife said she was probably in our apartment sleeping.

“I was not satisfied with this explanation because my children don’t usually sleep early. When I went up, I did not see my daughter so we started asking around. Some little children in the compound then told me that Gbuchenge had called my daughter earlier to help him buy akara.

Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo’s  brother Capt. Yusuf Sabo Sambo has died at the age of 58

Capt Yusuf Sabo Sambo, who is the immediate junior brother to Vice President, died  today Sunday April 27, 2014 at the Bill Clinton drive Airport Road Abuja.

He has since been buried at the Apo cemetery, Abuja according to Islamic rites, in the presence of former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and several other dignitaries and sympathizers.

Until his death the deceased was a qualified pilot who worked with the former Nigerian Airways and the Presidential Air Fleet before retiring to be on his own.

Late Capt. Sambo was born in 1956. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and 10 brothers and sisters.See the graphic pictures after cut..

South Korea's PM resigns over ferry disaster

   

South Korea's prime minister has announced his resignation over the widespread criticism over the government's response to the April 16 ferry disaster.

Prime Minister Chung Hong-won announced his resignation early on Sunday at an emergency news conference in Seoul, the capital.

   "I offer my apology for having been unable to prevent this accident from happening and            unable to properly respond to it afterwards," he said. "I believed I, as the prime minister,       certainly had to take responsibility and resign."

Chung's resignation was approved by President Park Geun-hye although her spokesman later said that he would remain in his post until the rescue operation was completed, the Reuters news agency reported.

The Sewol ferry sank on a routine trip south from the port of Incheon to the traditional holiday island of Jeju.

Your country is burning, yet all you do is point accusing fingers at one another, act as if all is well and talk about who will be President in 2015. When they finally kill all your warriors, impale all your champions, behead all your leaders, rape all your women, dismember your country and take all your children captive that is when you will know what you were up against. And by then it will be too late. War is upon us and yet we continue to sleep. In civilised countries where men of honour reside, by now, young men would have signed up, gone to the war front and offered themselves in battle and old men would have been co-coordinating their noble and gallant efforts. But not here. Here we are still involving ourselves in a stale debate about who and what Boko Haram is and what to do about them. Meanwhile they laugh at us, bomb our cities, kill our people, spoil our glory, dim our star and drink the blood of our children.
