Samuel Eze Ugum, a Nigerian national, will spend the next nine years serving a prison term in Finland, after a Court of Appeal found him culpable in the death of a drug user in 2009.
In a ruling published on Friday morning, the Helsinki Appeal Court found that the the 36-year-old Nigerian culpable in the incident where a man died after using heroin that he thought was cocaine at Helsinki’s Glo Hotel three years ago.
According to prosecutors, another was seriously ill after snorting strong, uncut heroin at the hotel in 2009. The users had thought the substance was cocaine. Following the death, police discovered a large amount of the drug in Espoo.
Ugum was charged with drug offences, aggravated negligent manslaughter and aggravated causing bodily harm for his role in the incident. He was subsequently sentenced to a nine-year term in prison after trials in a lower court.
The Supreme court returned the case to the court in May on behalf of the Nigerian man, because his lawyer had not been present during his police interviews.
His testimony in court then diverged from what he had told police during his initial interviews.
The Court upheld the first ruling.
