Appeal Court declares Lead City University Law programme illegal

The Court of Appeal on Wednesday ruled that Lead City University, an Ibadan-based private university, had been running its Law programme illegally.
The three-man panel of judges, in a judgement that lasted about three hours, upturned an earlier decision of an Oyo State High Court which declared illegal the invalidation of the programme by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The lower court’s judgement was based on a suit filed by a first class graduate of law in the university, Segun Alli, accusing the NUC of denying him the right to proceed to the law school after completing his degree programme in the private university.
Giving the lead Judgment, which was unanimously adopted by two other justices, Chidi Uwa upheld the appeal of the NUC, declaring that the university has been operating its law programme without the required accreditation.

Outrage as bananas thrown at Italy's first black minister

Italian Minister for Integration Cecile Kyenge
Integration minister Cecile Kyenge, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was making a speech at the Friday rally when a member of the audience began to launch the pieces of fruit towards her. "Another shameful and disgraceful gesture. Solidarity with the Minister Kyenge. Now let's just isolate the idiots," said Gianni Alemanno, former mayor of Rome.

Samsung Beats Apple To Become World’s Most Profitable Phone Maker.

Apple has lost its status as the world’s most profitable maker of mobile phones, with strong demand for Samsung‘s Galaxy handsets pushing the South Korean multinational into the financial lead for the first time.

The California company made an estimated $3.2bn (£2.1bn) profit from iPhone sales in the second quarter of the year, according to the research firm Strategy Analytics, a marked drop from $4.6bn a year ago and less than Samsung’s estimated $5.2bn haul from both its basic models and smartphones in the same period. While the high-priced iPhone was the engine that propelled Apple to become the world’s most valuable company, its customers are no longer bent on owning the latest model. The strong performance of its Samsung’s flagship, Galaxy S4 has, at least for now, put an end to Apple’s four-year reign as the world’s most profitable phone-maker.

Apple’s global smartphone market share has fallen from 17% to 14%, its lowest level for three years, while Samsung’s edged up to 33%, Strategy Analytics’ research shows. Samsung sold 76m smartphones in the quarter to June, more than twice Apple’s 31m iPhones, and up from 49m in the same period a year ago. LG, ZTE and Huawei have all roughly doubled their worldwide shipments by unit.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Charity Uzoechina, daughter of Redeem Pastor Raymond Uzoechina Converts To Islam

The conversion to Islam of 25-year-old Charity Uzoechina, daughter of Pastor Raymond Uzoechina of Redeem Christian Church of God, Kwankwashe, Suleja, continues to generate controversy. Her father accused the Estu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubukar, of hypnotizing his daughter, who has since changed her name to A’isha, to embrace Islam. A’isha, who hails from Asaba, Delta State, came to Abuja at the age of 10 when her father relocated from Lagos.

After her secondary school education at Army Day Secondary School Asokoro, Abuja she got admission into Federal Polytechnic, Bida to read Public Administration. She, however, withdrew from the course in her first year. She embraced Islam on February 15, 2013. A’isha said since her family relocated to Suleja, Niger State, she has been in the midst of Muslims, which accorded her the opportunity to have several Muslims friends and learnt a lot about Islam.

The travails of A’isha began when she ran to the Estu Nupe’s palace in Bida on March 1, this year to seek protection against any aggression she may face should her family know about her conversion to Islam. This led to a controversy that is still ongoing, with her father accusing the traditional ruler of kidnapping his daughter. Along the line, several meetings were organized between A’isha and her father Pastor Uzoechina and his daughter at the instance of the Estu Nupe, who also involved some members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

But despite that, A’isha refused to follow her father, alleging that he has threatened to deal with her by taking her away to a place that she will not be able to practice her new religion. A’isha has taken the matter to a Shariah court in Bida and the court is expected to rule on August 1, 2013 whether or not the 25-year-old should be released to her parents or not. She speaks exclusively to Weekly Trust.

Excerpts: Weekly Trust:
What is your name?

Aisha Uzoechina: I was formerly known as Charity Uzoechina and now A’isha Uzoechina. Why the change of name? I changed my name because I have accepted Islam.

Lagos dumps 70 beggars, others in Onitsha

The beggars.
No fewer than 70 beggars and the homeless were on Wednesday dumped at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Agents of the Lagos State Government reportedly brought the destitute to Onitsha.
The destitute told journalists that they were dumped about 3am at Upper Iweka after being detained in Ikorodu, Lagos, for over six months for alleged wandering and other minor offences by the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline officials.
The destitute said they were brought to Onitsha in four buses, escorted by riot policemen.
One of them, Mr. Osondu Mbuto, from Ohaozara in Ebonyi State and a petty trader in Lagos, said he was arrested by the Lagos State Government officials while going to his shop on December 18, 2012.
Mbuto added that the Lagos State Government officials were in company with some policemen.
The Chairman of Nigeria Red Cross Society in the South-East, Dr. Peter Katchy, described the action of the Lagos State officials as condemnable.
He said, “It’s very deplorable; it’s very disheartening that a state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria will bundle people, who are not even indigenes of Anambra State, and dump them under the flyover at Upper Iweka in Onitsha.

Senate will reconsider resolution on child marriage – Mark

President of the Senate, David Mark, has promised that the Senate will revisit its decision to amend  Section 29(4)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which defines the full age of a woman seeking to renounce her citizenship.
The Senate Committee on Constitution Review led by Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, had recommended that sub-section 4b be deleted because it was “discriminatory.” It   suggested that a woman of any age, once married, was an adult.
Although Section 29 deals with the right of citizens to renounce their citizenship  and subsection 4 defines the age at which a citizen could do so, a religious connotation brought in by Senator Ahmed Yerima swayed  Senators’  votes to retain the clause.
The Senate had initially voted to delete it as recommended by the committee, but had to retake its  voting after  Yerima and a few others protested.
While receiving a Non-Governmental Organisation, Gender and Constitutional Reform Network, in the Senate on Wednesday, Mark admitted that   religious sentiment  played a role in the final outcome of the voting on the clause.

Lagos warns residents against Coronavirus

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, has warned residents to take precautionary measures against being infected with a new virus, known as Coronavirus.
Coronavirus is a virus which primarily infects the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract of mammals and birds. There are up to five different currently known strains of coronaviruses that infect humans.
Idris, in a statement on Monday, said the infection, which had claimed over 80 lives globally, especially in the Middle East, has yet to be detected in the state.
But in spite of this, he called on residents to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
He said studies were still being carried out globally to detect its exact mode of transmission but some have confirmed that close bodily contact with an infected person – through sneezing, coughing or a handshake constituted a risk.
